I work with individuals who have an excessive amount of self-control. Self-control is usually seen as a good thing; however, it is possible to have too much of a good thing. Excessive self-control is associated with feeling emotionally isolated and plays a role in chronic anxiety, obsessive-compulsive behavior, and chronic depression. I start by focusing on the need for social connectedness and prioritize ways create connection, a flexible mindset and a sense of advocacy to help the client create the life that reflects their values and helps them achieve their heartfelt goals.
I help each of you express the hurt and longing that is underneath the repeating patterns that interfere with your ability to communicate with each other. When each of you feels truly understood by the other love and intimacy return. We start with an evaluation to discover how you interact with each other and to identify how you push each other away when you feel hurt. After the evaluation I use Real Dialogue to teach you how to listen, respond and ask for what you need in a respectful, non-reactive way. Couple therapy sessions are 75 – 90 minutes.
I offer an RO DBT skills class via Zoom. The RO DBT Skills Class is a structured 30-week class based on a breakthrough, evidence-based protocol for treating chronic depression, anxiety, and loneliness stemming from too much self-control also known as over control (OC). Over control is a problem of loneliness, not from a lack of contact but from a lack of connection with others. In an RO DBT Skills Class group members learn: to form close social bonds, feel emotionally safe with other people, minimize anxiety, and develop self-compassion.
There are all kinds of losses in a lifetime, but the loss of a beloved person sometimes requires a specific counseling that helps one reconcile their grief. People do not "get over grief" but I can help you move through the grief so you can regain a sense of purpose and meaning to your life.
